The Long 'a' Sound

Writer: May and JayMay and Jay
Hi Friends!

We learnt about the short 'a' sound last time. Today, we're going to search for things that have the long 'a' sound.

There are lots of ways you can spell the long 'a' sound. You'll find this sound in words like 'paint', 'day', eight' and 'ate', for example.

Let's have a look at some words that contain different spellings of the long 'a'...

'a'

'ay'

'ai'

'ea'

'ey'

'ei'

'eigh'

'a-e' (this spelling has a letter between the 'a' and 'e')

Can you think of any more words? Perhaps you can search around your house and put items into groups according to their spelling.

Remember that not all words with these spellings are pronounced with a long 'a' sound. 'Pear' for example, although has the 'ea' spelling, is said with the 'air' sound, not the 'ay' sound.
