Bring the World Home

Writer: VictoriaVictoria

Many of us love to travel, experience different cultures, brush up on our languages and meet new people. Sadly, for lots of parents, this is no longer realistic. Today's financial landscape doesn't make travelling easy.

As someone who has always loved to travel, it's frustrating that I can't take my own children on global adventures. They have experienced remote parts of the UK and a tiny bit of continental Europe, but what I would give to show them the world!

However, it can still be fun bringing the world to the home or classroom. Google Street View and live webcams enable us to view pretty much anywhere in the world. This can be a fascinating way to explore without it costing more than a bit of broadband.

Even more exciting, Dublin and New York have set up portals in the street, where people in each city can see each other (read about it here) and give a wave. Imagine these portals popping up everywhere!

My love of travel and other cultures began at an early age, having quite a few worldwide pen-pals by my early teens. I didn't just enjoy finding out about other countries, I loved making up my own travel guides too.

I would grab a few brochures from the travel agent (remember those days?!) and cut up the pictures. I'd invent country names, flags, currencies, make up a whole language, create national dishes and so on. It was great fun thinking about the types of people that lived there. What was the weather like? What kinds of wildlife roamed around? I'd make up schools and jobs and all sorts.

This book was then born!

If your child is similar, they too might enjoy creating their own worlds. Using this book, they can make up everything from climate to national holidays, food to exports and personality traits to wildlife.

'Create Your Own World Activity Book' is perfect to keep the kids occupied in the summer holidays, whether you're staying at home or you are actually travelling.

Happy travels :)
